What is it?

Bima Sakhi Yojana is a women-focused initiative of Life Insurance Corporation of India under which women are recruited and trained as LIC agents, mainly in rural and semi-urban areas. Selected women receive structured training in insurance products, customer service and digital tools, and are paid a fixed monthly stipend for the first three years while they establish their client base. After the stipend period the income continues through the normal agency commission structure. The design recognises that women often need a bridge income during the first two or three years of any commission-based work, which is exactly when most new agents drop out.

Benefits

A monthly stipend for the first three years, paid at a reducing scale, so a new agent is not left without income while she learns. Free training and certification that leads to a recognised LIC agency, which continues as a livelihood for as long as she wishes. Commission on policies sold and renewals, which builds into a long-term recurring income. Work close to home with flexible hours, which suits women managing household responsibilities. A path towards supervisory roles for consistently performing agents, and a visible, respected role in the local community.

Eligibility criteria

  • Only women are eligible to apply
  • The applicant should be at least 18 years of age at the time of application
  • The upper age limit at entry is 70 years, which makes the scheme open to older women too
  • The minimum educational qualification is a pass in class 10
  • Preference is given to candidates from rural and semi-urban areas
  • Existing LIC agents and employees, and close relatives of LIC employees or agents, are not eligible under the standard rules
  • A retired LIC employee or former agent cannot re-enter through this scheme
  • The stipend continues only if the agent meets the prescribed performance and renewal conditions each year

Documents required

  • Proof of age such as Aadhaar, birth certificate or school leaving certificate
  • Class 10 marksheet or certificate as proof of qualification
  • Address proof of the area where the applicant will work
  • Recent passport-size photographs
  • Bank account details with IFSC for the stipend and commission credit
  • PAN card for agency registration and tax records

How to apply — step by step

  1. Visit the official LIC website and open the Bima Sakhi registration page
  2. Fill in the basic details — name, date of birth, education, address and branch preference
  3. Upload the age proof, qualification certificate, address proof and photograph
  4. Submit the form and note the reference number generated
  5. Wait for the branch or development officer to contact you for verification and a short interview
  6. Complete the prescribed training programme conducted by the branch
  7. Clear the insurance regulator's agency examination and receive the agency code
  8. Start selling policies; the stipend and commission are credited to the registered bank account

Important dates

This is a continuous recruitment initiative rather than a one-time drive, so applications are generally accepted round the year until the target number of agents for an area is filled. Branch-level intakes and training batches do have their own cut-off dates, so a candidate who registers early usually joins the next available batch instead of waiting a full cycle. The stipend runs for three years from the date of appointment, with the amount stepping down each year and continuing only if the yearly performance conditions are met.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the stipend as a guaranteed salary — it depends on meeting the yearly performance conditions
  • Applying through an agent or a paid consultancy when registration on the official site is free
  • Giving a bank account that is not in the applicant's own name
  • Skipping the agency examination preparation and losing the batch slot
  • Not disclosing a close family relationship with an existing agent or employee, which leads to rejection later
  • Assuming there is no work involved — income beyond the stipend depends entirely on policies sold and renewed
  • Believing the upper age limit is 50 and not applying; entry is allowed up to 70
