What is it?

The PM Internship Scheme places young people as interns in India's top companies for a twelve-month period so they gain real workplace experience. Interns receive a monthly stipend, part of which is paid by the company and part by the government, along with a one-time grant for incidental expenses and insurance cover under central schemes.

Benefits

Twelve months of structured on-the-job exposure in a large company, a monthly stipend, a one-time joining grant, insurance cover under PM Jeevan Jyoti and PM Suraksha Bima schemes, a completion certificate that strengthens a fresher CV, and improved chances of a full-time offer from the host company.

Eligibility criteria

  • Indian citizen aged between 21 and 24 years at the time of application
  • Not employed full time and not enrolled in a full-time course; online and distance learners are allowed
  • Passed class 10 or 12, or holds an ITI certificate, polytechnic diploma, or a degree such as BA, BSc, BCom, BCA, BBA or BPharma
  • Family annual income must not exceed ₹8 lakh in the previous financial year
  • No family member should hold a permanent government job
  • Graduates of IIT, IIM, IISER, NID, NLU, IIIT, and holders of CA, CS, CMA, MBBS, BDS, MBA or any master's or higher degree are not eligible
  • Candidates who completed skilling or apprenticeship under NAPS or NATS are excluded

Documents required

  • Aadhaar card for identity verification
  • Latest educational certificate or marksheet
  • Family income declaration as required by the portal
  • Bank account details with Aadhaar seeding for stipend credit
  • Recent passport size photograph
  • Resume, which the portal can auto-generate from your profile

How to apply — step by step

  1. Register on the PM Internship portal using mobile and Aadhaar-based e-KYC
  2. Complete the profile — qualification, skills, location preference and sector interest
  3. The portal auto-generates a resume from the profile data
  4. Browse matched internship opportunities and apply to a limited number of choices
  5. Companies shortlist candidates from the applicant pool
  6. Accept the offer within the deadline shown on the dashboard
  7. Join on the notified date; stipend begins after joining is confirmed

Important dates

Applications open in rounds rather than continuously. Each round has a fixed registration window followed by shortlisting and offer acceptance dates. Missing the offer acceptance deadline releases the seat to the next candidate, so check the dashboard daily after applying.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying while enrolled in a regular full-time course, which makes the application invalid
  • Overstating family income category or leaving the income declaration blank
  • Applying with an excluded higher qualification such as MBA or a professional degree
  • Choosing only one location, which drastically reduces matching chances
  • Not checking the dashboard, so the offer lapses after the acceptance window
