What is it?

MGNREGA guarantees 100 days of wage employment per year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work. Each registered household gets a job card, and the full panchayat-wise list of job card holders is public on nrega.nic.in.

Benefits

Checking the list confirms your job card is active and lets you see your job card number, which you need to demand work and track muster rolls and wage payments. If your name is missing, you can apply for a new card at the gram panchayat.

Practical example: Ramesh from a panchayat in Gaya, Bihar opens nrega.nic.in, clicks 'Job Cards', selects Bihar → Gaya → his block → panchayat, and opens the list. He finds his name and job card number, then uses it to check his pending wage in the 'Payment' section.

Eligibility criteria

  • ✓Adult member of a rural household willing to do unskilled manual work
  • ✓Residence in the gram panchayat where you apply
  • ✓One job card per household — all adult members' names can be on it

Documents required

  • ✓Aadhaar card of adult members
  • ✓Bank or post office account details
  • ✓Passport-size photo
  • ✓Address proof / ration card

How to apply — step by step

  1. Open nrega.nic.in on your phone
  2. Click 'Job Cards' under the Transparency & Accountability section
  3. Select State → District → Block → Panchayat
  4. The full job card list of the panchayat opens
  5. Search your name and note your job card number
  6. Use the job card number to check muster rolls and wage payment status in the 'Payment' section

Important dates

You can demand work any time of the year. Once you apply for work, the panchayat must provide it within 15 days — otherwise you are entitled to unemployment allowance as per state rules.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✓Checking only the job card list and not the muster roll, which shows actual days worked
  • ✓Bank account not linked with Aadhaar, causing wage payment failure
  • ✓Not demanding work in writing — verbal requests are hard to track
  • ✓Paying middlemen for a job card — registration at the panchayat is free

Frequently asked questions

My name is in the list but I got no work. What now?

Submit a written work demand to the gram panchayat. If work is not given in 15 days, you can claim unemployment allowance.

Wages not received after work?

Check the muster roll and payment status on nrega.nic.in with your job card number; if the muster shows work but payment failed, get your Aadhaar-bank seeding fixed at the bank.

Can women get a job card?

Yes — every adult member of the household, men and women, can be named on the card and demand work.

How do I add a new member to the card?

Apply at your gram panchayat with the new member's Aadhaar and photo; the panchayat updates the card after verification.
