The National Scholarship Portal is the single window through which central and state scholarships are applied for, verified and disbursed. Pre-matric schemes support students up to class 10, post-matric schemes cover class 11 onwards including degree and professional courses, and merit-cum-means schemes support professional study for low-income families.

Eligibility criteria
- ✓Student must be an Indian citizen studying in a recognised school, college or institute
- ✓Family annual income must be within the limit set by the specific scheme, commonly ₹2.5 lakh for post-matric categories
- ✓Minimum marks in the previous qualifying examination as specified by the scheme, often 50 percent
- ✓Student must not be receiving any other scholarship for the same course at the same time
- ✓Bank account must be in the student's own name and seeded with Aadhaar for DBT
- ✓For minority and category schemes, a valid community or caste certificate is required
- ✓Renewal applicants must have passed the previous year and maintained attendance norms

How to apply — step by step
- Complete One Time Registration on the National Scholarship Portal and note the OTR number
- Finish Aadhaar-based face or biometric authentication in the OTR app
- Log in with the OTR number and select the scholarship scheme you qualify for
- Fill personal, academic, income and bank details exactly as in documents
- Upload scanned documents within the stated size limits
- Submit and take a printout of the application for your institute
- Follow up so the institute verifies the application before the institute verification deadline
Important dates
NSP opens around mid-year for fresh and renewal applications, with the student deadline usually falling in the last quarter of the calendar year, followed by separate institute and district verification cut-offs. An application not verified by the institute in time is treated as not submitted, even if the student finished it early.
Common mistakes to avoid

- ✓Using a joint or parent's bank account instead of the student's own Aadhaar-seeded account
- ✓Uploading an income certificate that has expired or is issued by an unauthorised authority
