- First step
- One Time Registration (OTR)
- Identity check
- Aadhaar e-KYC
- 2026–27 change
- More than one scheme may be allowed
- Important limit
- Only one merit-based scheme
What is it?
One Time Registration is the identity profile used to enter National Scholarship Portal services. A student first registers and completes Aadhaar e-KYC, then signs in to see schemes generated from profile information. OTR is not the scholarship application itself: the student must still select a scheme, fill the form, upload documents and final-submit it.
Benefits
NSP brings participating central and state scholarships into one workflow and shows where an application is pending—student submission, institute verification, later verification or payment processing. The 2026–27 FAQ also changes the older blanket advice about applying to only one scheme.
Eligibility criteria
- ✓Student must create OTR and complete the identity steps required by NSP
- ✓The profile must match Aadhaar and academic records
- ✓Each scholarship has its own class/course, category, domicile, income and marks rules
- ✓For 2026–27, only one merit-based scheme may be applied for in an academic year
- ✓More than one welfare-based scheme may be applied for if the student is eligible, according to the official FAQ
- ✓Final eligibility is determined by the selected scheme and verification authorities
Documents required
- ✓Active mobile number and Aadhaar details
- ✓School/college enrolment number
- ✓Class 10 and 12 details where applicable
- ✓Current and previous marksheets
- ✓Domicile, income, caste/category, ration-card or disability details required by the chosen scheme
- ✓Student-owned bank details and institute/course information
How to apply — step by step
- Open scholarships.gov.in and choose the Students section
- Create One Time Registration and complete mobile/Aadhaar e-KYC
- Sign in using Aadhaar, APAAR or OTR as offered
- Complete the profile carefully; NSP uses it to display suitable schemes
- Open Apply Fresh and select the correct scholarship classification
- Fill scheme-specific details and upload only current readable documents
- Use Final Submit—saving a draft is not an application
- Track My Applications and follow up if institute verification remains pending
Important dates
Each scholarship and verification stage has its own deadline inside NSP. Check the selected scheme page and dashboard; a general portal date cannot safely replace the scheme-specific student, institute and nodal verification dates.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✓Treating an OTR number as a completed scholarship application
- ✓Entering profile data differently from Aadhaar or marksheets
- ✓Selecting a similar-sounding but wrong scheme
- ✓Leaving the form in draft instead of Final Submit
- ✓Applying to more than one merit-based scheme in 2026–27
- ✓Ignoring institute verification after submission
Frequently asked questions
Is OTR the same as an NSP application?
No. OTR creates the identity profile; you must still choose a scheme and final-submit its application.
Can I apply for multiple scholarships in 2026–27?
The official FAQ allows more than one subject to conditions: only one merit-based scheme, and more than one welfare-based scheme if eligible.
Why does NSP show my application as pending?
Open My Applications to identify the stage. It may await institute or later verification rather than action from the student.
Can I edit after Final Submit?
Editing is restricted after final submission. Use any correction window or institution guidance shown by NSP; do not create a duplicate account.
