What is it?

Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY gives ₹5 lakh per family per year of cashless hospitalization cover. The government identifies eligible families from SECC 2011 data and state lists — you do not 'apply'; you check whether your family is already in the database and then get the card made.

Benefits

If your name is in the list, you get cashless treatment at any empaneled public or private hospital across India — including surgeries, ICU and follow-up care — without paying anything at the hospital.

Practical example: Ramesh opens bis.pmjay.gov.in, enters his mobile number, verifies the OTP, selects his state and searches by Aadhaar. His wife's name shows 'Approved'. He takes her Aadhaar and ration card to the nearest empaneled hospital's Ayushman Mitra desk and the card is printed the same day.

Eligibility criteria

  • ✓Family listed in SECC 2011 deprivation/occupational categories (rural) or occupational categories (urban)
  • ✓Families covered under state-expanded schemes (varies by state)
  • ✓All senior citizens aged 70+ are covered regardless of income (Ayushman Vay Vandana)
  • ✓Name must match Aadhaar for card generation

Documents required

  • ✓Aadhaar card of the family member
  • ✓Ration card or family ID
  • ✓Mobile number for OTP
  • ✓SECC/PM-JAY letter if received

How to apply — step by step

  1. Open bis.pmjay.gov.in and enter your mobile number
  2. Verify with the OTP received
  3. Select your state and choose search by Aadhaar number, name, or ration card
  4. Check the result — 'Approved' names can get cards immediately
  5. Visit the Ayushman Mitra desk at an empaneled hospital or a CSC with Aadhaar and ration card
  6. Complete e-KYC (fingerprint/OTP) and collect the printed Ayushman card free

Important dates

There is no application deadline — the scheme is ongoing. Cards should be made before you need hospitalization, since card generation takes only a few minutes at the desk.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✓Paying anyone for the card — it is always free
  • ✓Searching only by name when spelling differs; Aadhaar search is more reliable
  • ✓Assuming treatment is cashless at any hospital — only empaneled hospitals accept the card
  • ✓Not adding new family members (newborn, spouse) through the family-addition process at the Ayushman Mitra desk

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Card generation at empaneled hospitals and CSCs is free. Report anyone charging money to the PM-JAY helpline 14555.

Can I use the card in another state?

Yes, PM-JAY is portable across all empaneled hospitals in India.

Are 70+ seniors covered even if not in the list?
