What is it?

Atal Pension Yojana is a government-backed pension scheme for workers in the unorganised sector. You contribute a fixed amount every month, quarter or half year until the age of 60, after which you receive a guaranteed monthly pension for life. The same pension continues for the spouse, and the accumulated corpus goes to the nominee afterwards.

Benefits

A guaranteed pension for life from age 60, the same pension continuing for the spouse after the subscriber's death, return of the accumulated corpus to the nominee, auto-debit convenience from a savings account, and a government guarantee on the minimum pension amount regardless of market returns.

Eligibility criteria

  • Indian citizen aged between 18 and 40 years at the time of joining
  • Must have a savings bank account or post office savings account
  • Mobile number and Aadhaar are needed for registration and alerts
  • Income tax payers are not eligible to join the scheme
  • Subscribers must not be receiving benefits under any other statutory social security scheme in conflict with APY rules
  • Only one APY account is allowed per person
  • Contribution must continue until the subscriber turns 60

Documents required

  • Aadhaar card for identity and linkage
  • Savings bank or post office account details
  • Active mobile number for SMS confirmations
  • Nominee details, including spouse details for married subscribers
  • Self-declaration of not being an income tax payer

How to apply — step by step

  1. Visit the bank or post office branch where you hold a savings account, or use net banking or the bank's mobile app
  2. Fill the APY registration form with Aadhaar, mobile and nominee details
  3. Choose the pension slab you want at age 60; the contribution is calculated from your current age
  4. Authorise auto-debit from the savings account in the chosen frequency
  5. Confirm registration through the SMS and PRAN allotment message
  6. Keep sufficient balance to avoid penalty charges on failed auto-debits
  7. Review the pension slab later if you want to increase or decrease it once a year

Important dates

There is no application window — accounts can be opened any day of the year. However, the joining age limit of 40 is strict, and the earlier you join the lower your monthly contribution for the same pension, so delay directly increases cost.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Joining while being an income tax payer, which makes the government co-contribution and eligibility invalid
  • Keeping a low balance so auto-debits fail and penalty charges accumulate
  • Not updating the nominee or spouse details after marriage
  • Opening a second APY account in another bank, which gets closed with deductions
  • Choosing a high pension slab without checking whether the monthly contribution is affordable until 60
