What is it?

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana gives Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to households installing rooftop solar — ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW and ₹78,000 for 3 kW or above. The whole flow — application, DISCOM approval, installation, inspection, commissioning and subsidy — runs online on the national portal. As of 19 March 2026, over 26.19 lakh systems were installed and ₹17,967 crore disbursed as CFA.

Benefits

The subsidy goes directly to your bank account (or loan account, if financed through the scheme). The portal shows every stage, so you never need to depend on the vendor or DISCOM office for status — you can see exactly where your application is stuck.

Practical example: Anil's 3 kW system was commissioned in June but no subsidy came for a month. On the portal he saw the application held at 'redemption' because his bank account name did not exactly match the electricity bill. He uploaded the signed undertaking with a name proof, and the CFA was released within two weeks.

Eligibility criteria

  • ✓Residential consumer with a grid-connected electricity connection from the local DISCOM
  • ✓Valid electricity bill in the applicant's name
  • ✓Rooftop rights and suitable shadow-free space
  • ✓Installation by a DISCOM-empanelled vendor registered on the portal
  • ✓Bank account name matching the electricity bill name (a common hold-up)

Documents required

  • ✓Latest electricity bill
  • ✓Aadhaar and PAN of the applicant
  • ✓Bank passbook/cancelled cheque (name must match the bill)
  • ✓Signed undertaking if asked for name-mismatch resolution

How to apply — step by step

  1. Log in at pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your registered mobile and OTP
  2. Open your application and note the current stage: feasibility, vendor selection, installation, inspection, commissioning, redemption
  3. If stuck at feasibility, follow up with your DISCOM sub-division
  4. After commissioning, submit bank details and redeem the subsidy on the portal
  5. CFA is processed by REC in about 15 days after redemption — track 'Payment Status' on the portal
  6. If held for name mismatch or low confidence score, upload the signed undertaking with name proof and re-submit

Important dates

The scheme runs till 31 March 2027. There is no separate deadline to redeem subsidy after commissioning, but delays in redemption directly delay your payment — redeem as soon as the commissioning certificate appears.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✓Paying the full vendor amount upfront without confirming the vendor is empanelled on the portal
  • ✓Bank account in a different name or spelling than the electricity bill
  • ✓Waiting for the vendor to 'push' the subsidy — redemption is the consumer's own step on the portal
  • ✓Believing agents who promise 'guaranteed subsidy' for a fee; CFA is automatic once stages complete
