Domicile Certificate Online Apply 2026: Documents, Steps and Status (All States)

A domicile or residence certificate (niwas praman patra) proves that you normally live in a particular state. It is issued by the state revenue department — usually the tehsildar or SDM — and is needed for state-quota admissions, state government jobs, scholarships and many welfare schemes. You apply on your state's e-district portal or at a CSC, and download the digitally signed certificate once it is approved.

What is it?

A domicile certificate is an official record, issued by your state government, stating that you are a resident of that state. Unlike Aadhaar — which is an identity number and does not by itself prove long-term residence for state benefits — the domicile certificate is what state admission bodies, recruitment boards and scholarship portals ask for when a seat or benefit is reserved for residents. Every state runs its own process, so the certificate of one state cannot be used to claim residence in another.

Benefits

With a valid domicile certificate you can apply for state-quota seats in colleges and medical/engineering counselling, state government job vacancies reserved for residents, state scholarships and fee-reimbursement schemes, and welfare schemes that are limited to residents. It is also often requested together with caste and income certificates, so having all three ready saves repeated trips to the tehsil.

Practical example: Example: a student in Uttar Pradesh needs a domicile certificate for a state counselling round. She opens edistrict.up.gov.in, registers with her mobile number, chooses the residence certificate service, fills her address as written on her Aadhaar and ration card, uploads both plus a photo, pays the small service fee and notes the application number. After tehsil-level verification she downloads the signed certificate from the same portal using that number.

Who is affected

  • ✓You must be ordinarily resident in the state; many states ask for proof of a minimum period of residence — check your state's current rule
  • ✓Children can usually get a certificate based on the parents' residence records
  • ✓Your name and address should match across the documents you upload
  • ✓You should not already hold an active domicile certificate of another state for the same purpose
  • ✓Final approval depends on verification by the tehsil or revenue office

What to check

  • ✓Aadhaar card
  • ✓Address proof such as ration card, voter ID, electricity bill or property record
  • ✓Recent passport-size photograph
  • ✓School or birth record showing place of study or birth, where asked
  • ✓Self-declaration or affidavit in the format given on the portal
  • ✓Parents' residence proof for minors

What to do next

  1. Open your state's official e-district portal (examples listed in the sources section) or visit the nearest CSC / Jan Seva Kendra
  2. Register or log in with your mobile number and OTP
  3. Choose the 'Domicile / Residence / Niwas' certificate service
  4. Fill the form exactly as your address appears on your documents
  5. Upload the documents and photo in the size and format the portal shows
  6. Pay the service fee, if any, and save the application number and receipt
  7. Track the status on the same portal; after approval, download the digitally signed certificate or fetch it in DigiLocker where your state is linked

Important dates

There is no single national deadline. Apply well before the last date of the admission form, recruitment notice or scholarship you need it for, because tehsil verification can take from a few days to a few weeks depending on the state and season. Some forms accept only certificates issued after a specific date, so read the notice carefully.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✓Address spelled differently on Aadhaar, ration card and the form
  • ✓Uploading blurred or oversized scans
  • ✓Waiting until the last week of an admission or job form
  • ✓Paying middlemen who promise a 'same day' certificate
  • ✓Using another state's certificate for a state-quota claim

Frequently asked questions

Is a domicile certificate the same as a residence certificate?

In most states yes — both names refer to the niwas praman patra issued by the revenue department. A few states issue them as separate services, so pick the one your form asks for.

Can I apply without visiting the office?

In most states you can apply fully online through the e-district portal or a CSC. Some cases may still need field verification.

How long is it valid?

Validity depends on the state and the purpose. Many forms accept older certificates, but some ask for a recently issued one, so check the notice.

How do I check my application status?

Use the 'track application' option on the same portal with your application number.
